When Ethan got home from VBS the other night it was getting dark and it was quite obvious bedtime was not in our near future. So when he asked if they could stay outside and catch lightning bugs, I thought why not? Even though Miss Elena was freshly bathed and in her jammies. I said okay lets have some fun. So I covered them with bug spray- dug out the bug catchers that I had bought earlier this summer but forgot to give them- grabbed an old pickle jar and an extra net for the neighbor boy and off they went on their firefly expedition!
Elena was having just a bit of trouble at first. Because she had to stop and examine what was in her net and kind of make friends first. They usually flew away again before she could put them in her box. But she loved counting and announcing to the neighborhood how many she had.
Ethan was like an old pro, he just caught, caught, caught. I think he had over 30 in his little container by the time we were finished.
My favorite part was at the end when we came into the house and they turned off the living room lights, laid down on the floor and together watched in amazement what they had found. For a brief moment a brother and sister enjoying time together :)
